Homeland Homes and Gardens: Designers' Challenge Goes GlobalMay 5 2005 by Tara Zucker
China When a newly married couple from a remote village (accountant Xiaolou and husband Jiang, a school teacher) apply for their own apartment, they are told to make a perilous journey to a distant town to purchase a bolt of red silk from a mysterious weaver. The journey will forever change their lives, not to mention their décor. Scandinavia Elsa stands at the window of a tiny apartment in Stockholm looking at the gray sky. "When will he arrive?" she says to no one in particular. Her husband, Viktor, sits on the couch weeping quietly. Elsa searches the street for a sign of the expected visitor. A young girl in a long black cape crosses the street holding a bright red balloon. Elsa watches the wind carry the balloon high into the distance. "Will he bring the fabric samples?" she whispers. France Valentine and Jean-Pierre have arranged to meet Claude, an interior designer, at the corner cafe. Valentine arrives first, and, mistaking the young waiter Michele for the decorator, agrees to go with him to the countryside. Jean-Pierre arrives and sees his secretary's beautiful 15 year old daughter who persuades him to drive her to her boyfriend's uncle's estate. Everyone attends a lavish picnic hosted by the uncle, who is Claude's lover. Jean-Pierre and Valentine realize they want to paint the living room moss green. England Angie and Tuck meet friends at the local pub, where Tuck discusses his plans to build a second bathroom and the ineffectual Labour Party. Angie, tired of Tuck's endless promises and the unresponsive Conservative Party, threatens to leave. Suddenly, a solicitor arrives with a letter revealing that Tuck, an orphan, is the long lost heir to the Aylsworth fortune. Angie, now Lady Aylsworth, and Tuck move into Aylsworth Manner, where they debate the wallpaper in the drawing room and the pointless general election.
