DHHG Book Review: "How Would Jesus Decorate?"

The DHHG Terror Alert: Lamigranite (laminate that looks like granite)

Decorating the average home involves making hundreds of choices. This can overwhelm even the most confident homeowner, causing confusion and doubt. In such situations, many have found it helpful to turn to a higher power for guidance.

In the crowded field of religious decorating books, a new work offers true insight on the path to successful home décor. In How Would Jesus Decorate? author Hugo Andalfalo helps those struggling with weighty decisions such as window treatments and table top accessories. A noted religious scholar and interior designer, Andalfalo has worked with hundreds of clients in his 30-year career. His expertise shows. This beautifully illustrated book discusses an array of decorating dilemmas and offers insight into how the Lord might tackle them.

HWJD starts with a brief introduction and prayer, and includes a handy glossary of decorating terms. The first chapter, "Look to Your Own House," deals with architecture. Andalfalo writes, "When we think of Jesus now, we think of His teachings as traditional, but at the time they were quite innovative. Most religious decorating scholars believe that the Lord our Savior would embrace the forward-thinking lines of American mid-century architecture, as well as much of modern Italian design."

"The Colors of Christ" chapter offers recommended hues for the faithful. Andalfalo explains that Jesus would be drawn to natural colors, such as one might find in a garden or a grotto. "The Son of God would favor a soft palette of grays, browns and blue-greens. Accent colors could be a lovely splash of periwinkle or persimmon, but remember to keep colors in the same intensities."

This comprehensive book touches on a vast array of topics, from furnishings ("Hand-crafted pieces in a variety of wood species - no veneers or particle board for JC!") to bathroom design ("A built-in bench in the master shower is nice for foot washing"). A great read for anyone interested in the basic principles of good décor, How Would Jesus Decorate? is a welcome addition to any decorating library, and earns a coveted "DHHG Looking Good!" stamp of approval.
