Congressman Calls Flag Burners "Treasonous"

Vote now!

Do YOU think the American Legion is un-American?
They got "America" in the name, don't they?
You're missing the point
Well if they was the Foreign Legion, we'd kill 'em
No, we wouldn't, and furthermore--
Commie pinko!
The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee called for the federal prosecution of a veteran's group because it openly advocates the burning of the American flag.

"We're at war, and for the American Legion to propagate this hateful, disrespectful practice emboldens our enemies - it is treasonous," charged Rep. Peter King (R-NY) at a press conference. King cited the Flag Code on the organization's own website which states, "when a flag has served its useful purpose, it should be destroyed, preferably by burning."

"It's a sad day for Old Glory when a pinko outfit like the American Legion can get away with something like this," agreed Senator Bill Frist (R-TN), the majority leader. Frist expressed disappointment that the Senate defeated a proposal for a constitutional amendment prohibiting the desecration of the American flag, which would have permitted the prosecution of groups like the American Legion and "their fellow travelers, the Boy Scouts."

"This is nuts," said John Colanna, a spokesman for the American Legion. "We only burn flags as part of dignified ceremony to properly dispose of flags that have outlived their usefulness. Our intentions are completely honorable."

"I have viewed a videotape of one of these so-called 'respectful ceremonies,'" said Frist, "and I can tell you that the flag in the tape looked to be in perfect condition to me. Why, that flag had bright red stripes and a vibrant field of stars - it could have been run up a pole and saluted for many years to come."

King called upon Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to quickly press charges against the American Legion, claming that inaction could "lead to more senseless attacks against our nation's innocent flags." As proof he cited a statement released a Miami-based terrorist cell.

According to an online posting by the group, Seven Dipsh**s Living in a Warehouse, "We hope to burn flags too, some day. All we have to figure out is how to get enough money to buy one, get our hand on some matches and obtain the instructions for igniting the matches."
