The only reason Carlos Beltran and Pedro Martinez signed with the downtrodden New York Mets was the chance to sleep with Anna Benson, who said she'd have sex with the whole team if she ever caught her pitcher-husband cheating on her.

"I know the Mets gave me $119 million over seven years, but who cares?" Beltran said as he was introduced at a Shea Stadium news conference. "That Anna Benson is ultra-hot. Houston and the Yankees couldn't offer anything like her."

Benson, wife of Mets pitcher Kris Benson and proclaimed "baseball's hottest wife" by FHM Magazine, said in an interview with shock jock Howard Stern her husband could cheat on her all he wants. But if he's caught, she'll have sex with every Mets player, trainer, coach and presumably front office personnel and batboys - after her comments, the Mets saw a 1,516 percent increase in requests for front office and batboy employment applications.

Beltran said her promise made his free-agent signing decision simple.

"I'm 27 and married," Beltran said. "But someone like Anna might be able to make me stray. Maybe. Who am I kidding? Of course she could. Let's Go Mets!"

Martinez, whose Mets signing was considered a surprise, agreed: "Man, how could any red-blooded ballplayer turn down a chance to cash in like that? I'm talking about Anna, not the $56 million the Mets gave me.

"The Mets don't know it, but I'd have come here for one-tenth the money, as long as Anna was around," Martinez added. "I was on the World Champion Red Sox. I couldn't have cared less about the Mets, until Anna's interview."

Beltran and Martinez said there are two challenges remaining: convincing other free agents to sign with the Mets - which shouldn't be too hard - and getting Kris Benson to wander from his marriage vows.

"It'll take a concentrated effort during the season," Martinez said. "But if we get 25 guys working together, we ought to be able to achieve our Anna goals.

"To heck with the World Series. We have no chance there. But Anna, that's a different story."
