Duke's Goal: All Blue Devils, All The Time

Do YOU think Duke's world domination plan will succeed?

I thought royalty wasn't allowed in America
Unlike the other 64 teams that started the NCAA basketball tournament, Duke University had a different, more lofty goal than a national championship.

"No doubt, we want to dominate the basketball court," said Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. "But we also want to dominate the television airwaves, the advertising market, the Internet. We want it all. We're basically talking world domination."

So far, so good.

Three former Duke players - Jim Spanarkel, Mike Gminski and Jay Bilas - serve as color analysts for CBS on NCAA games.

Add noted Duke apologists and supporters Billy Packer and Dick Vitale, as well as Sports Illustrated writer, CBS analyst and Duke grad Seth Davis, and the Blue Devils have a formidable tube presence.

Then there's the two Coach K television commercials, one for cars and the other for a credit card - so the Duke influence is there even when Duke isn't playing and ex-Duke players aren't announcing.

"It's like I said in my commercial for, oh, I forget what it was, I don't consider myself a coach," Coach K said recently, toweling off after a polo match. "If you look at my website, CoachK.com, you'll find that I'm a teacher, father, leader, motivator, student, coach, friend and mentor.

"Admittedly, that's quite a bit to do in one 24-hour day, but I manage my time wisely. I always try to do my commercials for good causes, and I'm proud of the car and credit card ads.

"My only disappointment was I auditioned for that upbeat Coke commercial where the young, hot, blonde chick roller skates along the beach. But I didn't get it because my hip problems prevented me from making all those turns."

Duke should be well-positioned for many years, as a basketball power and an overall cultural presence, Coach K said.

"I know a couple former Duke players, Quin Snyder at Missouri and Tommy Amaker at Michigan, could lose their coaching jobs one of these days. But they're bright, personable people - hey, they're Dookies - and should have no problem sliding into TV jobs to spread the good word about us."
