Red Auerbach Is Second Coaching Legend Returning to NBA

With a little help from Wilford Brimley, he could!
Angry and jealous that Coach Phil Jackson is returning to the Los Angeles Lakers, 87-year-old Boston coaching legend Red Auerbach says he's going to lead the Celtics next season.

"We've both won nine NBA championships, but there's no way I'm going to let the so-called Zen Master get ahead of me," said Auerbach, who last coached the Celtics in 1966.

"I don't care if I haven't coached in almost 40 years, basketball is basketball," Auerbach said. "The media and the public always bow down in front of Jackson, saying what a genius he is.

"Genius? He won six NBA titles with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, and three with Shaq O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. How smart do you have to be with those guys? Sure, I had Bill Russell and Bob Cousy and a bunch of other Hall of Famers. But we won fair and square."

Auerbach said he hopes to convince Russell, whose battles with Wilt Chamberlain were legendary, to join the Celtics as an off-the-bench role player.

"I don't care if he is 71 years old, he's still better than half the stiffs playing center in the NBA these days," Auerbach said. "I would ask Chamberlain, but he's been dead for a few years.

"Let's face it, I'm not getting any younger. This could be my last chance to win an NBA title. I may have to cut back on smoking my once-famous victory cigars, with my age and all these rules and regulations about smoke-free buildings. But it's a small price to pay."

Auerbach's decision to return to coaching caught NBA insiders by surprise.

"Red Auerbach? I thought he was dead," Phil Jackson said. "Red Auerbach? Is he nuts? No way he'll be able to relate to today's players. Red Auerbach? He's a relic, a museum piece."

Jackson, who then burst out laughing, declined further comment.

But Auerbach said: "We'll see who gets the last laugh. I'll either beat him to 10 or keep him from doing it - or I'll die trying. Wait and see."
